It seems like there’s constantly new information released that tells us what to do or not do to stay healthy. Some women believe that they only need to visit their gynecologist once every few years while others schedule appointments annually. When should you plan to visit the gynecologist?
Your First Gynecologist Visit
If you are a parent, then you should plan to take your daughter to her first gynecologist visit between the ages of 13 and 15. If you are older than 15 and have never been to the doctor, then you should schedule a visit as soon as possible.
Regular Gynecologist Visits
After your first visit, you should plan to return once per year. This allows your doctor to look for any changes in your body and to perform tests that can identify factors that could become a major concern later. A Pap smear should be done regularly to find abnormalities that could cause cancer.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists recommends that women who are between 21 and 29 years of age should have a pelvic exam and Pap smear annually. Women who are between the ages of 30 and 64 should have a pelvic exam yearly, and a Pap smear performed at minimum every other year.
